The Rostov region is the land of a rich and famous history, generous nature, original Cossack culture, talented and hospitable people. The region is located in the southeast of the European part of Russia, in the basin of the low Don. It is formed on September 13, 1937. It covers the area of more than 100,8 thousand sq. km. The administrative centre is the city of Rostov-on-Don (with the population of above 1 million person), a large industrial, cultural and scientific centre, an important junction where the largest overland and water transport lines meet. The distance from Rostov-on-Don to Moscow is 1226 km.
Political and social stability, commonwealth of more than 100 nationalities living in the Don Land, have made the Rostov region one of the most dynamically developing regions of the Russian Federation.
While traveling along the region the tourists get acquainted with the rich historical past and present of the steppe region, its sights, poetic legends and originality of Don Cossacks. A unique archeological museum – reserve Tanais with examples of ancient culture of Scythians and Sarmatians is widely known in Russia and abroad.
One of the most ancient towns of the Don is Azov where battle glory of the Russian fleet started. The city of Taganrog is rich in cultural and architectural monuments. It is the native city of the great Russian writer Anton Tchekhov.
The single museum of Don Cossacks in Russia is located in the city of Novocherkassk, the capital of the Great Don Army.
Vyoshenskaya village is not only the most beautiful part of Don nature and Cossack history, but also the homeland of the writer Mikhail Sholokhov, a Nobel prize winner.
